l live in a small town and do not have the money to advertise in local papers that l need a home to rent. Or is there a landlord website that lists available homes that l can check into ?

Check craigslist.org
also, freecycle.org and then send out a request looking for rental
But really, drive around and/or check your local papers. There has to be somewhere that landlords run the rental ads.

This how we did it in the 60s and 70s. Church bulletins. This is the paper every Catholic Church and some others hand out during Sunday Service. It is a small community information sheet. Try it, no cost to you.
