Southern Virginia, but not so far south where you start hearing constant accents.
You could get a practical mansion for that budget in certain areas there. Well, just rather large. It is a peaceful area, nice people, average and not elevated crime rate, and a lot of natural parks, theme parks (well, two.), regional parks, and museums. Plus, you could always take a couple hour drive to drive up to the capital. The education is pretty good there too if you have kids.

l would say Long Island, New York. l used to live there, & it was lovely. There is a very convenient train line that leads to NYC (the LIRR). There r also a couple of beaches only about 20 minutes away (from Suffolk County). L l is generally safe; however, Suffolk county is safer than Nassau county. It is also very clean here; l remember, the town l lived in had flowers & trees planted in most of the public places & there were wildflowers growing on the sides of the highways. There is also some great shopping malls & centers too. L l is great! This website has the best list of properties availible in LI: http://mlsli.com/

l would say any mid-size city in Canada. In general though l would think it would depend on what u like. If u love the outdoors, somewhere like Kirkland near Seattle might appeal to you. Okotoks is a beautiful town close to Calgary that is environmentally progressive, has a fabulous economy, less traffic than the city but close enough to commute. Once all the land currently slated for sale is taken in Okotoks, they r not releasing any more for sale as they want to keep the ecosystem intact. They have a great website if u want to learn more about it..just type Okotoks, Alberta into google. l could also suggest a little city called Leduc which is 10 minutes south of Edmonton. If u like country type people, & lower taxes but like to be close to the city for work. You might try narrowing down what kind of climate u like, then search in those areas, & keep narrowing until u find a place that has the amenities & features that r important to you. For safety, most cities have statistics available online, & for atmosphere, once u decide that, u could use google earth to see how many lakes/rivers (or whatever appeals to you. r near the cities u r looking at.) Once u have a short list of places.you could also post specific questions on here about commute times etc for residents to help u with.Hope that helps:)
