Can l hire a repairman to come over and deduct the charge from my rent? l live in Albany, NY.

(There is food all over the dishes on the top rack. Maybe the filter at the bottom just needs to be cleaned? The dishwasher looks at least 10 years old. So another question...what might be wrong with the dishwasher.

The guy has come over twice and told us not to put pans over where the sprayer comes up (duh, we never do that). And to make sure that the water was hot enough, which it was.)

state law dictates whether you can fix it yourself (or pay) and deduct the expense from your rent...

First, make sure you have notified your landlord in writing..state law will also spell out how long he has to correct a deficiency like a dishwasher and what your remedies are if he fails to do so.

Do not just arbitrarily deduct it and hope for the best.NY tenant laws are pretty specific.

l do not know who your landlord is, but l could almost guarantee that they will not pay for a repairman that you hire. Most landlords have certain repairmen that they will send over, and if you hire an outside worker, you will most likely be expected to pay for it.

We had a similar problem with our old dishwasher, and we just kept bothering our landlord until they sent someone over to fix it. It is not a great solution, but it will save you the cost of repairs.

The filter should not need cleaning, the dishes should be rinsed before they go in there. No food should be on the dishes when they go in.

l would charge the tenant, as it is neglect that is the problem.

You can try this if you do not mind being evicted, but you should be payin this bill yourself, you damaged the dishwasher.
