l have lived in the same rental with a month to month agreement for over a year. Our landlord just switched property manangents and we have not signed anything for this new one but it came into effect the day they let us know.i just recieved a paper on my door( along with all of the other tenants) that our water will be shut off in two days if we do not put it in our names. my agreement that l signed to move in was they pay the water but with this switch i'm not sure what going on? Do not they have to atleast give me a thirty day notice if l have to take over a bill like this? Im in Oregon.

Without a lease, l think the most they have to give u is until the first of the next rent period, probably the first of the month. You could call ur mayor is office & ask for the phone number of the department that deals with landlord/tenant issues. They'd know for sure.

l had a similar situation when l rented a flat in Brooklyn. The day after Christmas, we were told our rent would increase $100 on January 1. The department of housing said since we did not have a lease, that was just too bad My landlady was a greedy witch-with-a-B, & even sued the neighbor for falling on the sidewalk during an ice storm. Not AFTER the ice storm when he could have done something about it, but while the ice was falling. And she won.

Check with your local city hall or similar authority. It certainly sounds like a change in terms, and could be viewed as a rent increase.

But since you're month-to-month, it sounds like they have every right to change the terms, with a 30-day notice. So the best you get out of it is 1 month is water bill saved. It could even be a small claims suit that could get you a refund after the fact, for one month is worth of water.
